First Quilting FO of the New Year
January 06, 2008
(There are knitting FO's, too, but right now I'm in stealth mode, yarn-wise.)
Jingle Jolly Tablerunner, graciously provided by Monica at
Happy Zombie. At least
one online group I belong to that's doing this in a semi-organized fashion this month. Monica's set up
a gallery on her blog, and I've already seen some pretty nifty ones posted over in the Yahoo group.
The top was created from pre-cut squares and strips that I've had just taking up space for over 4 years (yay! stash attack!), and the backing, batting and binding also came from my stash. I was
SO proud of myself for not obsessing over the placement of the scraps (I only moved a couple around, then got all strong and just let it go).
Mr. W. isn't excited about the color scheme - I believe his comment was, "It's a bit tame, compared to
what you've been working on recently."
Now, here's the deal: "They" say that whatever you do on January 1 is a good indicator of what you'll be doing during the year. (pshaw) It took me about 3 hours to piece this tablerunner together. I
tried to do some free-form, free-motion, don't-plan, utility quilting on it.
I just couldn't bring myself to do it.
Actually, I did it just fine, but I hated it, so I picked out all of the quilting and did some organized quilting instead. I was soooooooo okay with that. There's a lot more going on in the quilting than what you can see (two colors of thread, echo quilting, other stuff).
Then I had issues with the binding. I was trying to figure out how to sew the binding on the back and flip it over to the front for finishing. I know people do it all the time, but it just didn't fit in my brain. I ended up applying and
removing the binding THREE times.
After
three days of futzing with the quilting and binding, I think I made a decision (I believe it rhymed with "Puckett") and just called it good (ish).
If what you do at the beginning of the year is an indicator of what you'll do during the remainder of the year, I'm in big trouble. Just order my OCD meds now, because I might as well change my name to Monk.

Love your finished tablerunner. Enjoyed the link to show the other finishes too. I'm a member of Quilted Table and have this project on my 'to do' list .... hopefully soon :)
