Maybe a Laundry PSA
April 10, 2006
So, there I was, doing my two week's worth of laundry in three loads…
Side trip: We have a wonderful Whirlpool Duet front load washer (and of course, the dryer, otherwise I guess it would be called a Solo, not a Duet, right?). You know the one I'm talking about – the one they advertised as being able to do 16 pairs of jeans in one load? Well, it is incredibly rare that anyone in our household wears anything more delicate than t-shirts or sweatshirts and jeans. And of course, we all know that those can be shoved in all together. With the towels and washcloths and dishcloths. And the pajamas. See why two weeks fits into three loads?
Back to the show: There I was, doing my laundry. After I've taken the dirty clothes from the laundry basket to put into the washer, I put the basket on the floor between the two machines (not on top of the washer because during the spin cycle, which
really takes itself seriously, it will BUMP-BUMP-RATTLE-CRASH onto the floor and everyone will jump and say lots of swear words and try to figure out what that loud noise was that came from the back of the house). Now the basket is ready to catch the clothes that don't want to go peacefully from open washer door to open dryer door. It's my little way of protecting the socks from becoming orphans, amongst other altruistic reasons.
So the basket is ready to catch clean clothes.
Wait. Isn't that the basket that just carried DIRTY clothes? Now, neither of us is a car mechanic. We don't work in coal mines. But how about those naaa-aaaa-aaaasty dishrags? The jeans that covered the springboard (my legs) for the muddy-footed pooch last weekend? The washcloth that has black mascara stripes on it? Those things were IN that basket that I'm about to use!
I pick up the basket and have a look. Hmmm. There's some sand-looking stuff in the bottom, right there. What's that pink spot that looks like a dehydrated drop of who-knows-what? There's a vary faint stripe in the corner over there - is that a hint of mud that was relocated from pooch to jeans to basket?
THIS is where I'm planning to put clean, WET clothes? Well, hey! The wetness of the clean clothes should wipe up those mystery marks right quick!
(It takes me so long to get to the point.) Do I have to wash out my baskets after dirty and before clean every time? When is the last time YOU washed out YOUR laundry basket?
On the other hand, I've been doing laundry for decades (I hate being able to say "decades" like that, but it's amazing how often I do) and it's taken me this long to get a clue. Maybe I should leave well enough alone. Or pretend that this conversation never happened.
